This Thangka painting features several Buddhas surrounded by Bodhisattvas. A Bodhisattva is being who aspire to enlightenment and dedicate his life to help others.
This mandala represents the Five Paths of awakening that a practitioner must follow with the taking of the bodhisattva vow.
The five paths are:
- The path of accumulation.
- The path of preparation or application.
- The path of seeing.
- The path of meditation.
- The path of no more learning.
The five paths are divided in ten different stages called “Bhumi” (grounds).
The ten bhumis are stages of realization of emptiness and they act as a support for the good qualities that a Bodisattva must learn during his/her path of awakening.
